CCM Computer Science Student Receives NSF Grant for AI Research

Contributing to the World of Artificial Intelligence - Posted 9/14/17
Joseph Gatto, a computer science student at County College of Morris (CCM), was able to gain some resume-building experience this summer as a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant recipient delving into the world of artificial intelligence.

Gatto, of Morristown, was presented with a $5,000 grant through the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates program. With that grant, he was able to conduct research into machine learning at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). In addition, he was provided with free room and board at NJIT.

Along with nine other students from New Jersey and New York, Gatto spent 10 weeks working with NJIT Professor Usman Roshan on artificial intelligence.

Gatto’s part of the project focused on deep learning algorithms that allow computers to understand images better.

“If it weren’t for CCM, I would not have had the opportunity to participate in this research project,” says Gatto. “Its reputation for being a top community college in New Jersey helped me tremendously.”
