A Science and Mathematics Option
Note: Developmental courses MAT 011, MAT 014, MAT 016, ENG 007, ENG 022, ENG 025 and all ESL classes are prerequisites for core Biology and Chemistry courses. However, selected Science courses may be taken as electives before completing the Developmental courses listed above. Our understanding of biological processes has increased tremendously in recent years. This knowledge explosion has dramatically expanded the demand for biologists in both traditional fields as well as a number of exciting new areas that crossover into other related disciplines. Some of these career paths include:

The Biology Option is designed to maximize transferability to four-year baccalaureate institutions and professional schools by:

  • Providing a liberal arts program with emphasis on the sciences and mathematics
  • Including courses in the Curriculum that can either parallel
    • Those required in the first two years of most baccalaureate programs in biology, or
    • The courses required for entry into the most popular professional programs
  • Providing transfer agreements and Guaranteed Admissions Programs with other institutions such as Centenary College, The College of St. Elizabeth, and William Patterson University. Please refer to the Articulation Agreements page of the CCM Web site for complete and current information.

Specialized Tracks Provide Flexibility Within the Biology Option

Each Track within the Biology Option is designed to provide the education, training, and flexibility to suit your immediate and long-term goals. You can find the specific courses applicable to each of the Tracks on the Curriculum Checksheet page of the CCM Web site.

Available Tracks within the Biology Option include the following:

  • Traditional (Track 1) - With a general scope, this is designed to satisfy the needs of most students since this Track provides a broad, but flexible, scope suitable to many educational and career paths.
  • Heath Related (Track 2) - This is intended for students who are planning to transfer directly to professional schools such as nursing, occupational therapy, and physician assistant. Since course selection within this track is narrower than other tracks, timely consultation with a faculty advisor is critical.
  • Preprofessional/Scientific (Track 3) - Designed for those with above average aptitude and skills in science and mathematics, this more demanding track is suitable for students who desire to transfer to competitive baccalaureate programs or professional schools, or medical, veterinary, or dental school. It is essential that students seek advice from academic advisors as soon as possible.
  • Environmental (Track 4) - Intended to meet the needs of students interested in a career in the environmental field, this track integrates the biological and physical science and applies the concepts from those fields to the study of the environment and to solving environmental problems. Because this field is multifaceted and complex, it is critical for students to seek advisement as soon as possible.
  • Nutrition (Track 5) - The nutritional science field applies concepts from biology, chemistry, and the social sciences toward understanding the role of nutrition in optimal health, and uses that understanding to influence nutritional practices in all segments of the population.
  • Biology Education (Track 6) - This track is designed to prepare students for a career teaching Biology. Please refer to the Biology Education page for further information.

Faculty Advisors Are Your Best Resource for Choosing An Appropriate Curriculum

  •  You are strongly urged to work closely with your academic advisor who can help you make most efficient use of your time at CCM. The wide variety of career options and the diversity in requirements of baccalaureate and professional schools to which you may transfer, demand careful consideration and planning. Your advisors are familiar with these considerations - and are ready to help! Take advantage of their knowledge and expertise.
  • If you are preparing for medical, dental or veterinary medical schools, you should see an academic advisor in the Department of Biology immediately. Your advisors can help you plan your coursework appropriately and maximize the efficiency of the sequence in which courses will be taken.
